Description:
Awns of both central and lateral spikelets are reduced to about 3/5 of the long awned type. Texture of the short awn is finer and more flexible than that of the long awn, expecially in non-uzu genotypes. Awn length of heterozygotes in some crosses is shorter than in the normal parent.
Description courtesy of the Barley Genetics Stocks AceDB Database
Further information: An epistatic interaction exists between the Kap (hooded) and Lks2 loci. In plants that are homozygous for the recessive allele of lks2, the hooded phenotype is masked, resulting in a short-awned, non-hooded inforescence rather than the hooded phenotype.
