| | An experiment was conducted to study the interrelationship among 10 seed vigour traits in 12 wheat genotypes through variance, co-variance and path coefficient analyses, to determine broad-sense heritability and to estimate genetic advance under selection. The genotypes showed significant difference for all traits, except for percentage of normal seedling. Seed dry weight was genetically correlated with mean germination time, seed reserve depletion ratio and germination index. Thus, selection for seed vigour traits should be performed without changing seed dry weight because seed dry weight is a primary component and its changes may have important unpredictable consequences on grain yield. Path coefficient analysis showed that conversion efficiency of seed reserve and seed reserve utilization ratio had strong direct effect on seedling weight, and that mean germination time was significantly negatively correlated with germination index. Moderate to high estimates of broad-sense heritability, genetic coefficient of variation and expected genetic advance were obtained for electrical conductivity, germination index, mean germination time, seed dry weight, seedling dry weight and seed reserve depletion ratio, indicating the possibility for improving these traits |
