Protocol	Nodal pubescence was visually scored on the node subtending the flag leaf of each plant. Pubescence above and below the node were scored independently similar to Coffman`s (1977) description of cultivars. The Np1 allele designated by Simons et al. (1978) based on Litzenberger (1949) and Craigmiles (1952) studies probably is the identical allele to the pubescence allele carried by Ogle. Brooks has an alternative pubescence allele (designated Np1b) at the Np-1 locus that confers a denser pubescence than the Ogle Np1 allele.
