Reserved Laboratory Designators for DNA Probes, Primers and Markers

Katrien M. Devos (kdevos@uga.edu)
Jorge Dubcovsky (
jdubcovsky@ucdavis.edu)
Last update November 2007

Symbols for wheat DNA-markers of unknown function include a 'laboratory designator' which, along with a number, identifies the DNA clone or primer(s) used to detect the locus. The designator is chosen either by the laboratory that produced the clone or designed the primer(s) or, if that laboratory chooses not to do so, then by the laboratory that mapped the locus. It should consist of from two to four and preferably three letters that are chosen carefully to insure that they differ both from those used by other laboratories and from those that compose gene symbols.

This file was compiled to assist investigators who wish to identify laboratory designators that have already been used. It consists of two parts, (1) a list of laboratory designators (in alphabetical order) and the name of the investigator(s) who assigned each designator and (2) a list of investigators (in alphabetical order), their addresses, and the designator(s) assigned by them. Wheat laboratory designators may consist of upper and/or lower-case letters, except in locus symbols, where only lower-case letters are used. In this file, designators are shown in lower-case letters only. The name of the individual, institution, or species that is the source of the acronym that composes the designator, when listed, is indicated with an asterisk (*).

The information in this file was compiled from the literature and from contacts with individual investigators. Most, but undoubtedly not all, of the designators that have been assigned to wheat loci to date are listed. Researchers are urged to report errors, unlisted laboratory designators that are already in use, and newly-chosen designators to either Katrien M. Devos or Jorge Dubcovsky (see above for e-mail addresses) so that this file may be revised accordingly. Investigators who wish to choose a new laboratory designator should consult the section entitled 'Guidelines for Nomenclature of Biochemical/Molecular Loci in Wheat and Related Species' in the "Catalogue of Gene Symbols for Wheat - 1998 edition", http://wheat.pw.usda.gov/ggpages/wgc/98. See especially paragraph '5.1 DNA markers of unknown function' and paragraph '5.6 Laboratory designators'.
