Need for the workshop
Investment
in plant breeding in the U.S. is declining in all sectors. A factual and
compelling response is needed. This workshop will establish the Plant Breeding
Coordinating Committee to meet the need. The Committee will be a permanent
forum for long-term strategic leadership for the public and private plant
breeding profession and the U.S. national plant breeding effort as a
whole.
Workshop objectives
1) Develop an initial work plan to respond effectively to current
challenges in the discipline; and,
2)
Establish the Plant Breeding Coordinating Committee, including first election of officers.
Workshop
approach
The program will analyze the role
of plant breeding in achieving popular goals identified by USDA through national
listening sessions:

Excellence
in science and technology.
·
A
competitive agricultural system in the global economy
·
Competitiveness,
sustainability, & quality of life in rural America
·
A
safe and secure food and fiber system
·
A
healthy, well-nourished population
·
Harmony
between agriculture and the environment
For
each goal, presentations and break-out groups will address three questions:

General
instructions:
·
Posters
should present data and other information on the status of plant breeding
investment at the presenter’s employing entity, including:
o
investment
in plant breeding research, education, and/or extension; and in
o
multidisciplinary
work related to plant breeding;
o
the
entity’s policy and the future outlook for plant breeding.
·
Multiple
authors from the same entity will be asked to collaborate on a single poster.
·
Note
that full poster texts and tables will be distributed to workshop
participants.
·
Research
posters will NOT be accepted at this workshop.

Workshop
sessions will be at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 201 Harrison Oaks Boulevard, Cary,
NC, 27513, Tel.: 919/677-1840.
Room
rate at the Embassy Suites is $169.00 per night, including full breakfast. Reservations
must be made by January 8 to guarantee this rate. Make reservations
directly with the hotel. A block of rooms is being held for nights of February
7 and 8, 2007 under the name "NC Plant Breeding Workshop".
The organizers will
greatly appreciate your early hotel reservation.
This will help us
provide accurate numbers to the hotel and avoid budget overruns.

Who should attend
this workshop
Both public- and
private-sector plant breeders, at all career stages.
Multidisciplinary
colleagues and others interested in the future of plant breeding.
Active
participants:
Participants will be asked to commit to 1.5 days of concentration and discussion
based on their experience and ideas.
International
participants are
welcome. This is a U.S.-oriented committee, but the organizers expect
it to be a relevant model for other countries. Information on status and on plant
breeding in other countries and international entities is relevant; posters on these subjects are welcome.
Space is limited to
250 persons.
