CALL FOR PRE-PROPOSALS

The North American Barley Genome Project (NABGP) is soliciting pre-proposals for fiscal year 2004.

The NABGP supports research projects that will contribute to a better understanding of the barley genome, transcriptome, and/or proteome and that will ultimately contribute to the improvement of barley quality and productivity.  Proposals may involve development, maintenance and distribution of tools, or they may represent applications of tools to specific challenges.  Examples include (but are not restricted to) yield, adaptation, abiotic stress resistance (e.g. drought and cold tolerance), biotic stress (e.g. diseases and insect resistance), and quality (e.g. malting, feed, and food).

WHAT TO SUBMIT

Proposals are limited to eight pages (seven pages for items A-F and one page for item G below) and must include the following sections:

A. Summary:  Provide a succinct and cogent synopsis of the proposed work, including objectives, methodology, expected outputs, and relevance to NABGP objectives.

B. Introduction:  List and describe the objectives. Briefly review the current status of the proposed research area and include any pertinent published or preliminary data.  Exhaustive literature reviews are not necessary.  List and briefly describe the proposed outputs.

C. Experimental Plan:  Clearly and succinctly describe the experiments or investigations in the sequence in which they will be performed.  Include adequate, but not excessive, detail on techniques, protocols, and data analysis procedures.  Describe the avenues by which the results can be transferred or applied to meet the needs of the NABGP.   For multi-year projects, provide a projected time-frame.

D. Bibliography (and Appendices if needed)

E. Budget Justification:  Provide justification for the items in your budget in the page preceding F.

F. Budget:  Please use the standard NRI budget form (OMB #0524-0022).

No indirect costs are allowed.

In compliance with the “bureaucratic headache reduction act”, budgets for these pre-proposals do not have to be signed by your authorized organization representative at this point. Full signature pages will be required only for those projects recommended for funding by the NABGP Steering Committee.

G. Current and Pending Support: Please use the standard NRI form (OMB #0524-0022).

DO NOT SUBMIT LETTERS OF SUPPORT FOR YOUR PROPOSAL.
