Postdoctoral Research Associate Position in Barley Developmental Genetics

A Postdoctoral Research Associate Position is available for a highly motivated individual to study a collection of low-tillering barley mutants to identify the key genetic components and regulatory networks in axillary meristem initiation, development and tillering. This is a USDA-NRI funded position. The postdoctoral research associate will focus on three objectives. (1) Isolate the Uniculm2 (Cul2) gene via a map-based cloning approach. Barley carrying recessive mutations at the Cul2 gene do not tiller. A genetic map for the cul2 region and genetic populations segregating for cul2 are available. (2) Identify and characterize regulatory genes that control axillary meristem development and tillering. A suppressor mutant of the cul2 mutant phenotype has been identified. The incumbent will morphologically and genetically characterize this mutant and identify and characterize additional suppressor mutants. (3) Use the Barley1 Affymetrix GeneChip to identify gene expression networks during axillary meristem development and tillering. Four low-tillering mutants will be examined at key developmental stages. The position is available for one year with subsequent years contingent upon funding and performance. This is an academic professional, 12-month full-time position.

Qualifications:
Minimum: Ph.D. in plant genetics, plant molecular genetics or related discipline with demonstrated experience in molecular genetics.

Desired: Experience in microarray experimental design and analysis, developmental biology, genomics and bioinformatics. Excellent oral and written communication skills are also desirable.
