| Statistical Geneticist in North America Corn Line Development

Responsibilities: Monsanto is seeking a highly motivated individual with the ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary corn breeding team focused on developing improved corn inbreds. The statistical geneticist's primary responsibility is to analyze corn breeding data utilizing the latest in statistical applications. This will involve mining existing data and analyzing and interpreting phenotypic and molecular data from new corn breeding experiments. Crop genetic and environmental modeling will be done to assist in the development of appropriate Testing and Breeding strategies. The incumbent will also design novel experiments and develop suitable statistical programs to enable the determination of optimal breeding procedures and to facilitate breeding process improvements. The results and interpretations from these various statistical analyses will need to be routinely and appropriately summarized in reports and presented to breeding management and breeders. The selected individual will interact with individuals from the line development, breeding technology and breeding IT organizations. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Requirements: PhD in Plant/Animal Breeding/Genetics or appropriate Biological Sciences with a strong statistical/data analysis background. Additional requirements include 3 to 5 years of work experience in applying statistical methods to plant or animal genetics, a solid understanding of statistical theory and the art of data analysis, strong data management and statistical computing skills (eg.competent in SAS, Gauss) and knowledge of mixed models such as BLUP. Additionally, the candidate needs to be able to successfully demonstrate their technical proficiency, scientific creativity, ability to collaborate with others and think independently. The candidate needs to be organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated. Strong oral and written communication skills are needed, along with a demonstrated ability to write and speak fluently in English and work in interdisciplinary teams. Familiarity with data mining techniques, S-PLUS and C/C++ programming, and environmental/geostatistical database applications would be a plus.
