Postdoctoral position Molecular Characterization of Wheat Disease Resistance Gene Yr36 Department of Plant Sciences, University of California Davis, CA USA.

We are looking for a motivated postdoc to characterize a candidate gene for the High Temperature stripe rust resistance gene Yr36 from T. dicoccoides. We have recently completed the high density and physical maps of the Yr36 gene and identified a candidate gene in the T. dicoccoides line that is deleted in the susceptible durum parent. Yr36 confers broad and partial resistance to stripe rust only at high temperatures and is not effective at low temperatures. It is a very exciting story since the gene has a new gene architecture not found in Arabidopsis or rice, and is absent in all the modern durum and common wheat germplasm. Since we have already identified the gene (we are currently validating it by TILLING and transgenics), the next phase will focus on the characterization of the role of this gene in the resistance pathway. A good biochemistry background would be preferred, but a clear understanding of molecular genetics and disease resistance pathways is also required.
