POST DOCTORIAL SCIENTIST - Ref: PD/T4/03/2008
General: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) helps reduce poverty, hunger and environmental degradation by enhancing animal agriculture in developing countries, working in partnership with organisations in developing countries. ILRI’s headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya, with a second principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The position: ILRI seeks to recruit a post-doctoral scientist to join the East Coast Fever (ECF) Infection and Treatment Method (ITM) project. The position is required to ensure the further use of the ITM vaccine methodology, to improve the production process and to provide scientific data to guide future research in East Coast fever. Specifically, the successful applicant will be expected to:
Contribute to efforts to improve the production process for the ITM vaccine, including improved protocols for quality assurance /quality control, vaccine composition analysis and dose determination, and establishing the feasibility of in vitro culture and lyophilisation.
Assist with activities supporting the deployment of the ITM vaccine, especially in developing corrective and preventive action activities and in parasite strain characterisation.
Assist with research into the immunobiology of the ITM vaccine.
Location: ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya
Suitable candidates will have:
A PhD degree obtained no more than 5 years ago in vaccinology / immunology or molecular biology of pathogenic organisms
Experience in academic and commercial biotechnology research groups, with knowledge of quality assurance issues
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to perform in multidisciplinary and multicultural research environment.
Terms of appointment: The initial appointment will be for two years with the possibility of renewal for one year, contingent upon individual performance. ILRI offers a competitive remuneration package paid in US dollars.
