Assistant Plant Scientist - Molecular Markers

Role Purpose
-
Performs research and/or development in collaboration and support of molecular marker strategies to create profitable products.

Accountabilities -
  • Plan, organize and ensure the execution of nursery (summer, off-season) and greenhouse activities including:
  • Draft planting lists and organize planting
  • Manage seed inventory and maintain its integrity
  • Obtain all documents, such as phytosanitary certificates, necessary for seed movement and field or greenhouse operations
  • Hire and supervise seasonal employees to carry out field operations such as planting, pollinations, harvesting, shelling, shipping, etc.

  • Plan, organize and support, together with molecular marker lab(s) sampling activities including:
  • Effectively schedule projects in the lab, through interaction with appropriate lab and field staff
  • Construct tissue sampling template maps for marker projects
  •  Coordinate and execute tissue sampling of projects
  • Ensure data collection as required, whether in nurseries, greenhouses, or trial fields:
  • Plan, organize and execute data collection (from planting to data) in interaction with all relevant partners (breeding teams, analytical labs, etc.)
  • Enter data in appropriate databases (SPIRIT) or requested file formats
  • Maintain databases up-to-date including:
  •  Ensure integrity of data and database(s) (SPIRIT, etc.)
  • Ensure integrity of sample identifiers in interactions withlabs (providing samples, receiving data)
  • Document progress and report issues:
  • Perform data analyses ("pre-analyses") as requested
  • Make progress report to line manager in a timely and accurate manner
  • Collaboratively analyze and solve technical problems
  • Ensure, with Sweet Corn Molecular Breeding Project Leader availability and use of most useful and efficient tools and processes in area of responsibility:
  • Maintain awareness of best practices with respect to tools and processes, in particular through interactions with peers across crops and regions
  • Propose and lead whenever appropriate, the development of new tools or processes
Knowledge, experience & capabilities -
  • 2 years related experience
  • BA required
  • Knowledge of DNA sequencing analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of plant breeding, plant biology, statistics and agriculture.
