Field, greenhouse, and laboratory activities will include development of populations that will be of use for genetic analysis and also for improved breeding methodologies. The successful applicant is also expected to collaborate with scientists in other departments to better understand the genetic mechanisms of disease resistance, mineral accumulation in seed, and molecular genetics.

Responsibilities include: evaluating selected populations developed in the breeding programs for improved agronomic traits, canning quality, characterizing novel disease resistance genes, designing and conducting greenhouse experiments, recording and data analysis, population screening with molecular markers for dry bean and oat projects, and publishing research results. Duties will involve all aspects of a breeding/genetics program so the candidate have a holistic approach and learn all the aspects involved in the functioning of a breeding program.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in plant breeding, genetics, agronomy, horticulture, or closely related field of study. Laboratory experience mainly involving DNA extraction and molecular marker techniques. Computer literacy in recording and statistically analyzing data. Experience using word processing and spreadsheet software programs. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a research team. Handling of some hazardous chemicals required. Ability to work under adverse environmental conditions during the field growing season (spring, summer, fall). Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
