Assistant Professor of Small Grains Genetics

Position Title: Assistant Professor of Small Grains Genetics, Texas AgriLife Research-Amarillo (100%); this is a 12-month non-tenure track faculty appointment, with an academic appointment in the Soil & Crop Sciences Department at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX.

General Duties and Responsibilities: Conduct research in applied genetics and genomics as a team member of the Texas AgriLife Small Grains Improvement Program that conducts cultivar development and basic genetic studies in wheat and triticale targeting the High Plains and Rolling Plains of Texas. The research focus will include germplasm enhancement, molecular marker development, and molecular mechanisms of stress resistance. Research should lead toward increased production efficiency of wheat through increased yield, enhanced end-use value. Targeted stresses could include drought, high temperature, wheat streak mosaic virus, greenbug, Russian wheat aphid, Hessian fly, leaf rust, stripe rust, and stem rust.

Required Qualifications and Experience: Ph.D. in plant breeding, genetics, or related disciplines by date of appointment. The successful candidate must be skilled at standard molecular biology techniques; have demonstrated knowledge to conduct independent research, supervise scientific support staff and graduate students; publish results in refereed journals; deliver effective oral and written communications in English; write research articles, research reports, and competitive grant proposals. Post-doctoral experience in molecular genetic procedures applicable to small grains improvement is preferred, along with strong computer skills, experience in conducting and managing research projects beyond the Ph.D., cooperating with other research faculty members, and attracting competitive funding.
