Postdoctoral Research Associate

The National Sunflower Association is advertising for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position. Review of applications will begin immediately, and continue until the position is filled.

This position will develop advanced confectionery sunflower inbred lines that are resistant to sunflower rust (Puccinia helianthi), utilizing known resistance genes from various sunflower germplasm sources. The Research Associate will work under the guidance of a molecular geneticist who is a member of a multidisciplinary research team seeking to improve both oilseed and confectionery sunflower germplasm. The Research Associate will use conventional techniques of plant genetics and breeding, along with contemporary techniques of molecular genetics, to transfer rust resistance genes from cultivated oilseed sunflower into a suitable confectionery sunflower background, and will genetically map the introduced resistance genes. Applicants should have education and experience in plant breeding, molecular genetics, and a strong publication record. The appointment is for one year with additional years depending on satisfactory job performance and funding. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or green card holders. Salary for the position is $36,000 per year. Benefits include social security, life insurance, and a health plan.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The position requires a Ph.D. in genetics, plant breeding, or related discipline; working experience in molecular biology techniques, including RFLP and PCR analysis; excellent communication skills; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; ability to initiate and accomplish research goals including publication of results in respected scientific journals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in plant breeding, plant pathology, and computer technology, and experience with sunflower is highly desirable.
