Plant Science Department of South Dakota State University is seeking qualified applicants to complete PhD and/or MS programs with graduate research assistantships (GRA) in plant breeding and genetics. The successful candidates will work on projects that support the development of improved varieties and innovation of elite germplasm in soybean. The students will be trained in both academic research and practical breeding, including laboratory experiment, greenhouse management, field selection and evaluation, application of latest technologies/knowledge, and collaboration with other professionals, molecular biologists, crop geneticists, entomologists, plant pathologists, agronomists, etc. Applicants should have agronomic and/or biological educational backgrounds. MS training and research experience in plant breeding and genetics, crop science, or related fields is preferred. Applicants should also have the flexibility to work independently and ability/willingness to work cooperatively as a team member. Good oral and written communication skills are required. Candidates must meet academic requirements of the Graduate School and the Plant Science Department. Selection for the positions will be based on experience and academic performance/ achievements. Stipends for GRA appointments on a half-time basis (49% time) are $20,778 per year for PhD students and $16,709 per year for MS students, plus waivers of 2/3 resident tuition rate for courses.
