Monsanto Professorship in Plant Breeding and Disease Resistance

We seek an outstanding scientist who will develop a nationally
recognized research and teaching program with research emphasis on the
genetics of host plant resistance and plant breeding of maize. The
successful candidate will be expected to use plant breeding, plant
pathology, and molecular genetic tools to address important research
questions in maize improvement. The person selected for this position
will develop a research program that integrates molecular genetics with
field-oriented plant breeding and pathology to help solve problems and
generate knowledge of practical significance to the agricultural
industry and academia.

The successful candidate will become part of a broad, dynamic, and
internationally recognized faculty in agriculture. This individual will
become an integral part of the plant pathology and plant breeding
program in the Department of Crop Sciences, will participate in the
Illinois Maize Breeding and Genetics Laboratory, be a member of the
Illinois Plant Breeding Center, and will collaborate in
multidisciplinary teams investigating maize breeding and genetics, maize
pathogens, gene expression and molecular genetics, and plant
protection. It is expected that the successful candidate will
collaborate nationally and internationally, obtain extramural funding
for research, and develop private-public cooperative relationships. The
incumbent is expected to teach in the areas of plant breeding or plant
pathology or other topics and to contribute to the plant breeding and
plant pathology curriculum in the department.

A Ph.D. in plant pathology, plant breeding, or a related discipline, is
required. The successful applicant must demonstrate excellent
interpersonal and communications skills; demonstrate clear desire and
ability to propose, conduct and report independent and team-based
research; and demonstrate desire and ability to develop an excellent
teaching program.

This is a 9-month, academic, tenure track named professorship with
opportunity for summer appointment.
Responsibilities will include research, teaching, and outreach. Salary
is commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes a
comprehensive benefits package. The Monsanto Professorship includes
programmatic support and a salary stipend. The position is available as
