Putative/Predicted/Hypothetical Demystified
Ever wonder what the heck was the difference between a putative, predicted and hypothetical gene? According to the Gene List from Cold Springs Harbor, a putative gene has good to exact hits to sequences of known function; a predicted gene is identical to an EST, yet has no ascribed function; a hypothetical gene has no database match. Mystery solved.
