GrainGenes Updates

November 2020: Global Durum Genomic Resources at GrainGenes

In collaboration with the International Durum Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium and the Expert Working Group on Durum Wheat Genomics and Breeding, an expert working group endorsed by the Wheat Initiative, GrainGenes is making the genomic resources related to two collaborative germplasm collections publicly available: the Global Durum wheat Panel (GDP) and the Tetraploid wheat Germplasm Collection (TGC).

October 2020: Frost Resistance gene class curated from Wheat Gene Catalogue

The following gene class has been added to GrainGenes, based on the information in the Wheat Gene Catalogue (WGC). This includes all genes, along with any associated alleles, references, loci, germplasm sources:
Frost tolerance or resistance is the ability of a plant to survive freezing temperatures, and is an important part of winter hardiness. A lack of frost resistance is considered as a major factor limiting cultivation of winter wheat (Wurschum et al., 2017).

October 2020: Oat Dwarfing gene maps and new PCR-based markers

Dw6, a dwarfing gene in oat was mapped as the locus DwWA in two populations with new PCR-based markers by Zhao et al. (2018) Genetic mapping and a new PCR-based marker linked to a dwarfing gene in oat (Avena sativa L.). Genome 61:497.

See Oat-2018-Dwarfing mapping data for links to the maps..

For all recent oat genetic maps added to GrainGenes, see the Oat Mapathon Progress page.

September 2020: MNase chromatin states tracks at IWGSC Chinese Spring genome browser

MNase chromatin states tracks are available at GrainGenes IWGSC Chinese Spring v1.0 genome browser based on the data provided by the Akhunov Lab.

MNase-sensitive and MNase-resistant footprint data, as well as their intersects against 1,000 wheat genomes are available at the GrainGenes IWGSC Chinese Spring genome browser.

September 2020: Flour color gene class curated from Wheat Gene Catalog

The following gene class has been added to GrainGenes, based on the information in the Wheat Gene Catalogue (WGC). This includes all genes, inclusing any associated alleles, references, loci, germplasm sources:

The gene Lute is responsible for the esterification of lutein, one of the carotenoids contributing to flour colour. During grain storage post-harvest, esterification of lutein contributes to its stability, resulting in more color in the dry grain.
(Ahmad et al., 2015).

September 2020: 10+ Wheat Genome gene and transposon alignments to IWGSC Chinese Spring v1.0 are available

The genes, transposons, and LTR retrotransposon tracks created and aligned by the 10+ Wheat Genome project to the IWGSC Chinese Spring v1.0 genome browsers are now available at GrainGenes.

You can reach the IWGSC Chinese Spring v1.0 genome browser with those tracks selected at the GrainGenes IWGSC Chinese Spring genome browser.

September 2020: Wheat Annual Newsletter v.66 (2020) and Wheat Gene Catalogue-2020 Supplement available

Wheat Annual Newsletter Volume 66 (2020) is now available at https://wheat.pw.usda.gov/ggpages/awn/.

The volume, as well as previous volumes, can also be accessed at https://krex.k-state.edu/dspace/browse?type=title by searching for 'Annual Wheat Newsletter'.
