Genetics lead/senior scientist at BASF in Gent, Belgium

The purpose of this role is to manage and further develop state-of-the-art genetics approaches as part of our molecular breeding platform for hybrid row crops in BASF. In addition, this position will directly support BASFs global hybrid breeders.

What you can expect:
o You will lead a team of scientists, researchers and technicians in the production and delivery of appropriate genotyping data and genetic approaches.
o You will support the implementation of molecular breeding processes from marker-assisted selection to genomic prediction in hybrid breeding.
o You lead marker development, population design and genetic analyses to support breeding teams.
o You will actively contribute to the development and implementation of new methods to advance efficiency in genotyping, in native trait discovery and selection.
o You conceive, design and lead projects to integrate phenotypic and genotypic data to identify novel native traits for crop improvement as well as the genetic basis of native trait variation in wheat and/or oilseed rape.
o You contribute to multidisciplinary projects by providing quantitative genetics expertise, including expert data analysis, related statistics and interpretation for various molecular breeding projects.
o You oversee the implementation of state-of-the-art software applications and define and develop our fast-evolving genetics and genomics toolbox.
o You have efficient programming skills and have experience in integration of methods into existing platforms and databases. Principles of data traceability and access are familiar to you.

Qualifications
o You are an experienced scientist, with a Ph.D. in quantitative genetics/genetics or equivalent by experience, with 10 years of relevant experience in plant genetics, genomics and breeding.
o You have a passion for plant genetics and its applications to breeding.
o You are experienced in quantitative genetics, genetic mapping and marker-trait association analyses incorporating high-throughput genotyping.
o You have excellent knowledge of breeding with practical work experience in the implementation of selection strategies.
o Experience in hybrid breeding or in wheat and oilseeds are a strong plus.
o You are experienced in genotyping technologies.
o You are experienced in handling and utilizing large data sets in analysis workflows.
o You are proficient in scripting with R and/or Python.
o You have good reporting and communication skills in English (working language).
o You are a team player with strong interpersonal communication skills, able to work in a multicultural environment and with excellent leadership and people management skills.
