A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agriculture Research Service (ARS) through ORISE in Albany, California. As part of a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary team, the selected candidate will use his/her background and passion in computational biology to perform genome analysis in small grains and apply machine learning methods for functional, interaction, and dynamics predictions. To be eligible, applicants must have a doctorate in Computational Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related discipline in the biological or physical sciences within 5 years of desired starting date.

Required qualifications:
* Demonstrated experience in computational biology
* Demonstrated experience with computer programming for scientific research
* Demonstrated experience with UNIX/LINUX command line
* A strong publication record
* Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, while building and nurturing collaborations with external research groups
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills to disseminate research findings and keeping team members and collaborators informed

Preferred qualifications:
* Experience in plant genome analysis, especially in small grains
* Experience in machine learning

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE FOR THOSE WHO WILL REQUIRE A VISA: This training programs provides a J-1 visa a with two-year home physical presence requirement. This requirement cannot be easily waived. This means the incumbent will be required to go back to his/her home country for two years at the end of the appointment.

The appointment is full-time initially for 12 months and may be renewed for a second year based upon recommendation. The selected applicant will receive a stipend in an amount up to $73,905 as support for their living and other expenses during this appointment. In addition to stipend, the participant will also be awarded a health insurance stipend supplement up to $14,723 per year and a science and research travel allowance up to $4,000 per year. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
