This map set, published by Wight et al., 2003 (Genome 46:28-47), is an enhancement of the hexaploid oat map published by O'Donoughue et al, 1995 (Genome, 38:368-380). The original work was conducted in a recombinant inbred (RI) population derived from Avena byzantina C. Koch cv. 'Kanota' x A. sativa L. cv. 'Ogle'. The current work adds 607 new markers, some of which have been mapped in an expanded set of RI lines (133 vs. 71). Where possible, linkage groups are joined and assigned to chromosomes based on monosomic and/or nulisomic lines (Kianian et al. 1997, Genome, 40: 386-396; Start 2000, Thesis; Fox et al. 2001, TAG 102: 320-326). Chromosome assignment remains only partially resolved and ambiguous (see Table 4 in Genome 46:28-47). Numerical linkage group names have been preserved from O'Donoughue et al. (1995), with numbers concatenated to indicate the merging of linkage groups ('_' = aneuploid evidence, '+' = other evidence). Due to the high density of markers in some regions, a robust framework was developed to resolve linkage among 286 good quality markers. The remaining 880 markers were placed within the most likely framework intervals using chi square tests. The remark 'Marker is/is not a framework marker' indicates whether the marker is part of the framework. If the marker is not part of the framework, then the linear coordinate of the placed marker is estimated by applying a scaling factor to the distances between it and adjacent framework markers such that the framework interval remains constant. The remark 'Marker Placement Value = xxx cM' provides an indication of how well the marker fits within the interval into which it is placed. Ideally, this value should be approximately equal to the length of the interval into which it has been placed. When an interval contains many placed markers, the order implied by the coordinates is not necessarily correct. The true order within a dense cluster of markers can only be determined in a much larger population.
