Causal Organism
Xanthomonas campestris pv. translucens
Attacks leaves, stems and heads of wheat, particularly when grown under sprinkler irrigation. Symptoms on leaves (Bacterial Stripe) appear initially as water soaked spots and streaks that eventually turn brown and occasionally surrounded by a lime-green halo. Dark purple lesions with light yellow centers often form on the stem between the flag leaf collar and the head. Glumes of infected heads develop dark blotches. Infected awns develop a striped 'barber pole' appearance from alternating bands of diseased and healthy tissue. Bacteria spread to healthy plants by splashing water from rain or irrigation. Bacteria are spread between season on infested seed and straw.
