Leaf rust develops from spores carried on wind currents from regions where the disease persists over winter. Leaf rust appears as small, oval-shaped, orange-red pustules on the upper surface of leaves and leaf sheaths. Pustules form in random patterns. Development is favored by warmer, dryer weather and usually does not appear until late in the growing season. Yield losses can occur when conditions permit early infection or when late-maturing susceptible varieties are grown.
