Stem rust develops from spores carried on wind currents from regions where the disease persists over winter. Stem rust is favored by warm weather and usually develops late in the season. First appears as oval reddish-brown pustules. All aerial portions of wheat are susceptible, but stem rust pustules occur with greater frequency on leaf sheaths and stems. Stem rust pustules develop on both surfaces of infected leaves and possess very ragged edges compared to leaf rust pustules. Life cycle is completed on common barberry (Berberis vulgaris and B. canadensis). Stem rust also attacks barley, rye and triticale.
