Reaction to barley yellow dwarf virus
Symptoms
Caused by a virus transmitted by several cereal aphids including the bird cherry-oat aphid, corn leaf aphid, English grain aphid, greenbug and yellow sugarcane aphid. Principle symptoms include discoloration of leaf tips in shades of yellow, red and/or purple, reduced root growth and general stunting. Plants infected before the 4- to 5-leaf stage are severely stunted and may not head. Yield losses from early fall infections are usually proportional to percentage of plants infected by the virus. Plants infected after the boot stage exhibit few or no symptoms and may not suffer any yield losses.
