A consensus genetic map of wheat of more than 1000 points has been constructed from a base map together with linkage data from a range of other segregrating wheat populations, and rye and barley populations where collinearity has been shown. The map reveals extreme conservation of locus order between the A, B, and D genomes, disruped only be evolutionary translocation events involving chromosomes 2B, 4A, 5A, 6B, and 7B. Characterization of individual DNA clones demonstrated the presence of conserved loci which make up sets across the Triticeae genomes and other, more polymorphic loci which are genome-specific having arisen since isolation of the genomnes by speciation. The maps now also contain loci identified by rice and maize clones which have allowed a start to be made on the alignment of the genomes of the three major cereals.
