Abstract
Diallel crosses of 9 oat varieties were used to identify genes conferring stem rust resistance. These showed that C.I. 4023 has genes B, E and F, C.I. 3030 and C.I. 3037 have gene F, and that R.L. 524.1 has gene F and a gene at the same locus as gene B. Gene A which confers resistance to race 7A but not to 6A was found to be closely linked with gene F which confers good resistance to race 6A but not to 7A in the adult stage. A total of 1487 F3 and F4 lines from C.1. 4023 (genes B, E, and F) crossed with C.I. 7098 (genes A, B, and D) were tested with these two races. Only one F4 line which was resistant to race 6A and segregated to race 7A appeared to combine the genes A and F. Resistance of the combined type may soon be needed because race 6A is now common in Eastern Canada and race 7A is becoming more prevalent in Western Canada. No combination of the presently known genes except A and F will give adequate resistance to both races. The very tight linkage between genes A and D was confirmed.
