Abstract
To determine the genetic basis of stripe rust resistance, Jubilejna II, a wheat cultivar used to differentiate races of Puccinia striiformis (P. striiformis var. striiformis) in China, was crossed with a stripe rust susceptible cultivar Mingxian169 and cultivars with genes for resistance to the disease. Seedlings of the parents and F1, F2, and BC1 progeny were evaluated for resistance to Chinese pathotypes or races of P. striiformis. Jubilejna II had two recessive genes for resistance to race CY29, two dominant genes for resistance to race CY23 and CY31, and one dominant gene for resistance to pathotype Su-1. The genes that confer resistance to race CY29 did not confer resistance to CY23, CY31 and Su-1, which were named as YrJu1 and YrJu2, respectively. There was a common gene, which confers resistance to CY23, CY31 and Su-1, and this gene was allele or closely linked to the gene in Spaldings prolific that was named as YrJu3. Another gene conferring resistance to CY23 was allele or closely linked to the gene in Kangyin 655 and was named as YrJu4
