1. Comments on the 1996 Barley Newsletter

The Editorial Committee thanks all who submitted articles for the 1996 Barley Newsletter and those who took the time to request that their names be maintained on the mailing list. The articles were in good condition, and usually appear as they were submitted. Because most submissions were on disk, an effort was made to have the format (i.e., fonts, line spacing, etc.) of each article similar. Also, because submissions were sent on disk, the 1996 Barley Newsletter will be placed on the Internet (GrainGenes), as is done with the Wheat Newsletter.

2. Mailing List

The mailing list is prepared newly each year, based on authors of articles submitted and requests from individuals asking specifically that their names be placed on the list.

If you want to receive Volume 41 and are not submitting an article, return the enclosed form to the publishers of the Barley Newsletter (the American Malting Barley Association, Inc.). Please check your address and note any changes on the form. Where possible, please share your copy of the Barley Newsletter with others to reduce the number of copies that must be distributed.

3. The 1997 (Volume 41) Barley Newsletter

The Barley Newsletter Editorial Committee for the years 1998 to 2001, elected at the North American Barley Researchers Workshop in July 1996 are:

Articles for Volume 41 of the Barley Newsletter should be received by the editor by February 1, 1998. The editor encourages you to submit your contribution several weeks earlier than the deadline if you can do so. The Newsletter primarily is intended for informal communication among barley researchers. Information on any phase of barley research is welcomed, but contributions must conform to the following guidelines:
 

a. Submit articles in English. Limit the length to no more than 3 or 4 pages, single spaced. An original on good quality paper is needed.

b. Manuscripts should be very carefully proofed and in final form for photocopy printing. Occasionally where the author's native language is not English, and only minor changes are needed, an attempt to edit may be made. Where the quality of paper used for submission is unacceptable, the manuscript may be retyped. Manuscripts considered unsuitable for inclusion will be returned to the author(s) for revision and resubmission for a future volume.

c. If possible, submit a copy of the manuscript on a 3½ diskette. Please indicate the word-processing software used to prepare the file. Word 6.0 is preferred; yet, if another format is used, also include an ASCII file. Submission of the manuscript on disk will allow for reprinting of the manuscript if the format is incorrect or an obvious error is found. It also will allow for the possible submission of the 1997 Barley Newsletter to be included on the Internet via Graingenes.

d. All pages should have a left and right-hand margins of 3 cm, a top margin of 4 cm and a bottom margin of 3.5 cm. Do not number pages. Contributions should be titled as follows:

Affiliation of authors should be brief since mailing addresses will be listed in the back of the Newsletter.

e. Omit contributions that are strictly of local interest and do not submit manuscripts intended for publication or already published in recognized journals.

f. Examples of appropriate topics for the Newsletter are:

i. Useful and interesting germplasm, including new cultivars and parental or genetic stocks that should be of interest to others.

ii. New or innovative procedures for laboratory, greenhouse, or field use.

iii. Cultivar tests or breeding nursery management procedures that are new, more efficient, effective, or improved in some way over old ones.

iv. Objectives of your breeding program, including parental sources of resistance or for other traits being emphasized.

v. Screening procedures for diseases, insects, yield, or quality traits.

vi. New breeding techniques, methodologies, or equipment.

vii. Personnel changes.

viii. Philosophies, ideas or comments that would be interesting or useful to other barley researchers.

ix. An update on barley production or the cultivar complex in your area or country.

7. Contributions received after February 1, 1998 may not be included in Volume 41. To meet this deadline, foreign contributors are urged to send their manuscripts by airmail.

Volume 41 of the Barley Newsletter will be sent to contributors, noncontributors who currently are on the mailing list maintained by the publisher (American Malting Barley Association, Inc., 735 North Water Street, Suite 908, Milwaukee, WI 53202, USA), and those who request that their names be placed on the mailing list. Where manuscripts have multiple authors, please send complete addresses of all those who should receive a copy of the Newsletter. The Barley Newsletter is not normally distributed to libraries. However, it will be sent on request to a barley researcher for placement in a library where it can be shared by several workers.
