VI. DESCRIPTION OF GENETIC STOCKS

A considerable number of new genes have been found and assigned new symbols by several workers without application to or clarification of the Nomenclature Committee. Those are genes such as mt,,e, necl, nld, nls, v2, v4, v5, Xa1, and many others (cf. Table 1, BGN 1O, p. 97).

Workers who reported on those genes should prepare "Description of Genetic Stocks" and apply for the symbol by following the guidelines published in:
BGN 3:92-95

Another aspect in the description of genetic stocks is the need for revision and/or correction of the previous descriptions. With the new information added to any genetic stocks by allelism testing and/or linkage studies, the description needs frequent revision. Also it is necessary to make corrections for errors or mistakes in the previous descriptions.

I urge all workers who obtained new information or found errors/mistakes in the previous descriptions to make revision or correction of description as soon as possible. This revision/correction will provide up-to-date information on the barley genetic stocks to others barley workers. Your cooperation is highly appreciated.

BGS 457   vegetative dwarf   dwf

Previous nomenclature and gene symbol: None

Inheritance: Monofactorial recessive (1). Chromosomal location unknown.

Description: Mutant plants are completely vegetative and have a rosette habit. Internode elongation is absent until gibberellic acid is applied exogenously. Nearly normal growth can be induced by repeated applications of low concentrations of GA3, or by a single application of higher concentrations. Seed may be produced on treated plants. Plants grown from such seeds exhibit some carry-over effect of the GA3.

Origin: X-ray treatment of the cultivar Perth (CI 15624)

Inheritance:  Monofactorial recessive (2). Located on chromosome 5 (2).

Description: Selfing - None (2). Outcrossing - Complete female fertility (2).  Anther size - Smaller than fertile sib.

Origin of mutant: X-ray induced in the cultivar Hannchen C.I. 531 (1).

Mutational events: ms20 in Hannchen C.I. 531, X-ray induced (1).

Mutant used for description and seed stock: ms20 in Hannchen C.I. 531.

Description:  Selfing - 1 to 4% (1, 2).  Outcrossing - Complete female fertility (2).  Anther size - Almost equal to fertile sib.

Origin of mutant:  Spontaneous occurrence in Midwest Bulk C.I. 13640 (1).

Mutational events:  ms21 in C.I. 13640 (1).

Mutant used for description and seed stock:  ms21 in C.I. 13640.

8GS 0016   Waxy endosperm    wx

Previous nomenclature and gene symbolization:  None

Inheritance:  Monofactorial recessive (1, 2).  Located on chromosome 1 (4)

Description: Endosperm contains waxy starch. The starch in the endosperm and pollen grains becomes reddish-brown by iodine reaction (1, 2). No evidence for allelism tests among the cultivars used by Ono and Suzuki or between those three and the cultivar used by Tabata (4).

Origin of mutant:  Spontaneous mutant in several cultivars

Mutational events:
wx in Murasaki Mochi (winter type)
wx in Waxy Oderbrucker (spring type)
