I. 3. Arrangement of chapters in Barley Genetics Newsletter.
As most of the readers of BGN know, master lists of barley genes were
published in BGN Vol. 12 and are published again in BGN Vol. 13. One of
the authors of the lists suggested that the gene lists should be place
in the front section of the BGN because the lists are the most important
item in barley genetics (D. von Wettstein, personal comm.).
It is obvious from the arrangement of this volume, the above request was not fulfilled. The Barley Genetics Newsletter has been published in a kind of format which is now well established. The editors therefore plan to maintain the present format of chapter arrangement. Most readers are familiar with this format and have no problem in locating the list of barley genes. Even a new reader will have little problem in finding the gene list, since each volume has a table of contents well organized.
The editors consider that "II. Research Notes" are more important than
a "Gene list", which is merely a citation of symbols that have been used.
Many of these symbols have had no approval of the nomenclature committee
and many stocks designated by these symbols are not available. The editors
feel that a more useful gene listing would include one in which stocks
are available.
