Report of the Nomenclature and Gene Symbolization, and Linkage Groups and Genetic Stocks Committees
Members of the two Committees were: T. Tsuchiya (Chairman),
J. G. Moseman (Secretary), J. Jensen, U. Lundqvist, R. T. Ramage,
F. Scholz, S. Yasuda.
There were three meetings of the Committee. The following
topics were discussed and decisions made.
- Open meeting as the Nomenclature and Gene Symbolization Committee on Wednesday, October 8, 2000-2200.
- A motion was passed that "the recommended
systems for Nomenclature and Gene Symbolizaton
of the International Committee be published
annually in the Barley Genetics Newsletter."
- A motion was passed that someone be appointed
to be responsible for the molecular marker stocks.
- R. G. Widmaier, representative of the American
Malting Barley Association (AMBA), extended an
offer from AMBA to publish Volume 17 and future
volumes of the Barley Genetics Newsletter as
they are now publishing the Barley Newsletter.
The offer was accepted.
- Meeting of Committee members on Thursday, October 9, 1900-2000.
- All the Committee members were present. Four members
of the Committee requested that they be replaced on
the Committee. They were T. Tsuchiya, J. G. Moseman,
R. T. Ramage and S. Yasuda. The Committee agreed to
recommend to the International Organizing Committee
the following individuals as new members to the
Committee: J. Franckowiak (USA), G. Fedak (Canada),
W. Friedt (F.R.G.) and T. Konishi (Japan).
- The status of the assignment of individuals responsible for coordinating the Genetic Linkage Groups on
Chromosomes and Special Genetic Stocks was discussed.
The Committee agreed to present their recommended
changes for approval and accept suggestions by individuals in the open meeting for all participants.
- Open Meeting as the Linkage Groups and Genetic Stock Collections Committee on October 9, 2000-2200.
- The following is a list of the Chromosome Linkage
Groups and Genetic Stock Collections and the names
of the individuals who have agreed to be coordinators
for those groups and collections.

- Haploid genes - D. Falk, Canada.
- Changes in coordinators for collections
- Pest resistant genes - J. G. Moseman,
replaced by J. Helms Jørgensen, Denmark.
- Semi-dwarf genes - Mary Boulger, USA,
replaced by J. Franckowiak, USA.
- Earliness genes - Å. Gustafson, Sweden,
replaced by U. Lundqvist, Sweden.
- Lysine and Hordein genes - H. Doll,
Denmark, was eliminated and included
in the Biochemical Mutants (see below).
- Coordinators for new collections.
- Chromosome duplications - A. Hagberg, Sweden.
- Molecular markers - T. K. Blake, USA, overall coordinator.
- Monoclonal antibodies - S. E. Ulrich, USA.
- RFLP probes and cloned DNA libraries - P. R. Shewry, F.R.G. and T. K. Blake, USA.
- Biochemical mutants (excluding ant genes) - including lysin and hordein genes and nitrate reductase genes - A. Kleinhofs, USA.
- Coordinator for Asian countries - H. Yamaguchi.
- A motion was passed that the Committee recommend
the use of Ml as the designation of genes for
resistance to powdery mildew.
- R. T. Ramage and T. Tsuchiya and T. E. Haus
(represented by T. Tsuchiya) agreed to continue as
editors of the Barley Genetics Newsletter, since
AMBA has agreed to fund the publication of that
newsletter. Camera-ready manuscripts need to be
submitted for the newsletter. The North American
Barley Workers will be requested to apppoint indi-
viduals to replace Haus, Ramage and Tsuchiya as
editors of the Barley Genetics Newsletter at their
meeting in August, 1987.
- T. Tsuchiya requested that he be replaced as overall
chairman responsible for the Chromosome/Linkage Groups
and Collections. Those present accepted Dr.
Tsuchiya's resignation and expressed their
appreciation for the outstanding job and services that
he has done for barley workers world-wide. Udda
Lundqvist accepted the appointment as overall chairman
for the Chromosome/Linkage Groups and Collections.
- The inadequate dissemination of the large amounts of
documented genetic information on Barley Genetic
Stocks and the availability of those stocks was
discussed. The following recommendations were made.
- All coordinators should prepare an annual
report for the barley genetic newsletter.
- Udda Lundqvist agreed to coordinate the
assembling of information on linkage groups
and genetic stock collections and arrange
for publishing that information in
Hereditas.
- R. A. Nilan agreed to assemble the high-
lights of the Fifth Barley Genetic
Symposium. This summary will be published
in many journals to inform "the world" about
progress in barley genetics and related
areas, the value of barley as an experi-
mental organism, and new trends in barley
for use as food, fiber and scientific
investigations.
- The participants agreed that this discussion
was extremely important and needed and that
action must be taken. They agreed to
cooperate in improving the dissemination
of information regarding the value of the
genetic information and availability of
genetic stocks and collections for basic
and developmental research and for many
other purposes.
