III.1. Hastened reproduction of barley hybrids in glasshouses.

Experiments on hastened reproduction of hybrid plants of cereal crops in winter glasshouses, hydroponics and artificial light being applied, have been carried out at the Institute of Physics, Siberian Branch, the USSR Academy of Sciences. G. M. Lisovskij (1969) with his collaborators selected light regime using xenon lamps of DCsTV type - 6000 with an additional hydro filter. This regime contributes to security illumination as to its vigour and spectral composition not inferior to sun light, Arrangements controlling the conditions of nutrition and illumination being applied, the receipt of two hybrid generations in winter period is a quite certain result.

The breeders of the Krasnojarsk Research Institute of Agriculture took opportunity of this possibility and passed over to the said Institute of Physics 3 pairs of spring barley hybrids. By next spring they were able to receive F1 and F2 seeds. Their common coefficient of reproduction turned to be near 140. With a view of finding out a possible after effect of growing hybrid seeds under artificial conditions K. V. Dergachev and N. A Surin (1971) compared these seeds with similar material, but grown under normal field conditions. The results are adduced in Table 1.
