Coordinator's report: Eceriferum genes

Since the latest reports in Barley Genetics Newsletter (BGN) not many allelic tests have been conducted or reported on the Eceriferum genes.

In BGN 24:159-160, it has been reported that the Swedish eceriferum locus cer-u with the phenotypes of reduced wax coating and absent wax coating on the spike, leaf sheath and stem is allelic to the glossy sheath 8 gene gs8, localized in the short arm of chromosome 2. In the summer of 1995, the F2 generation has been grown, and the allelism between these two genes has become verified.

The descriptions on Eceriferum, Glossy leaf, Glossy sheath and Glossy spike genes are in progress to be revised and will be published in a special issue of BGN. These descriptions are also entering into the database "GrainGenes".

Many reports have been published on the localization in the chromosomes of the different Eceriferum (cer), glossy leaf (gl), glossy sheath (gs) and glossy spike (Gle) genes. Some new ones could be localized by evidence of linkage drag observed in Bowman backcross derived progenies (Franckowiak 1995). Several changes of localizations occurred over the years. An updated list of the localizations in the chromosomes is presented below.

Chromosome 1:
1L: gs3=cer-a (2, 13, 29, 31), cer-f (17, 18, 19), cer-z (4), cer-ze=gl5 (6, 11, 28), cer-yg (4).
unspecified: cer-k (4).

Chromosome 2:
2S: gs1=cer-q (25, 26), gs6=cer-c (16, 25, 26), cer-u=gs8 (25, 26), cer-v (17). 2L: cer-g (2, 17), cer-n=gs9 (2, 17, 18), cer-s=gs5 (13, 16, 24, 26).
unspecified: cer-yb (4).

Chromosome 3:
3S: cer-zd (2, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22), cer-ya (4), cer-yd (4). 3L : gs2=cer-b (1, 10, 16), cer-r (2), cer-zn (17, 18, 20, 21, 22), cer-yh (4).

Chromosome 4:
4L: gl1=cer-zh (14, 27, 30), gl3=cer-j (3, 8, 23), cer-zg (2, 5, 17, 18).

Chromosome 5:
5S: Gle1=Cer-yy (12). 5L: cer-e (2, 7, 17, 18), cer-zi (9, 18).

Chromosome 6:
6L: gs4=cer-x (13, 15, 31).

Chromosome 7:
7L: cer-i (2, 17, 18, 21), cer-t (2, 17, 18, 19, 21), cer-w (18, 21), cer-za (4), cer-zj (2, 17, 18, 19, 21), cer-zp (17), cer-ye (4).
