II.40. Allelic relationship between two glossy seedling genes, gl3 and gl4 in barley.

T. Tsuchiya, Department of Agronomy, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado 80521, U.S.A.

A glossy seedling gene (gl4) in Montcalm was said to be located on chromosome 6 with recombination value of 29.4% with a marker gene gs4 for glossy sheath and 30.4% with o for orange lemma (Walker et al., 1963). Another glossy seedling gene (gl3) in a variety, Goseshikoku, has been located on chromosome 4 by Takahashi et al. (1971). Four marker genes in chromosome 4 were tested against gl3 with recombination values of 40.08% with f9, 23.39% with K, 1.29% with br2 and 13.60% with B1.

As a part of extensive allelism tests among various mutants, gl3 was crossed reciprocally with gl4. All 73 F1 plants had glossy seedlings.

This result indicates that gl3 is allelic to gl4. Since gl3 was located on chromosome 4 using four genes as a marker on chromosome 4, it is reasonable to believe the the location of gl3 in chromosome 4 is definite. The gene gl4 was tested against only two markers on chromosome 6. Therefore, it is tentatively concluded that gl3 (=gl4) is located in chromosome 4. Critical trisomic analysis is being conducted.

Haus and Tsuchiya (1972, BGN 2:79) reported that the glossy seedling gene gl on chromosome 4 was allelic to another glossy seedling mutant gl2 on chromosome 4.

Based on these results, it is concluded that only two glossy seedling genes are definitely located on the barley chromosomes, gl and gl3; both of them being located on chromosome 4. Allelism testing between gl series and some glossy seedling mutants (cer-) obtained by Swedish workers is under way (Haus, unpublished).
