II.23. Performance and seed quality of tetraploid barley.

V. T. Manzjuk and P. N. Barsukov, Ukrainian Institut of Plant Industry, Breeding and Genetics, Kharkov, U.S.S.R.

Colchicine treatment of barley seed resulted in tetraploid forms of 8 barley cultivars, such as; Kharkovsky 306, Kharkovsky 410, Juzny, Ganna Loosdorfskaja, Europeum 353/133, Jubilejny and Kharkovsky 422.

Percentage of kernel in tetraploid C1 was low (15 to 43%) subsequently it increased to 95% in some C7 lines. The performance of such lines was 92% to 93% of that of diploid parents.

Protein content of tetraploids over years was relatively stable and it was significantly higher than that of diploid parents from 2,93% to 4,93% (protein content of diploids made from 16,08% to 17,41%).

The study of fraction composition of tetraploids showed that ploidy level increase resulted in quantitative redistribution of protein fractions in favour of most valuable water- and salt-soluble protein fractions.

So, seed protein content of tetraploid Kharkovsky 306 T was almost equal to that of Hiproly standard (24,64% and 26,16%, respectively). Also, in seed lysine content this tetraploid proved to be at the level of high lysine Hiproly standard (752 mg/100 g seed and 783 mg/100 g seed, respectively). The tryptophan contents were almost equal, too (241 mg/100 g seed and 259 mg/100 g seed, respectively).

Other tetraploids and lines developed from them showed high indices, too.
