FOREWORD

Barley Genetics Newsletter continues to grow in both quantity and quality of papers. The publication of research notes seems to be the principle usefulness of this Newsletter, and we believe that publication of research notes is one of the best ways to stimulate research on barley. We would like to remind authors and users of BGN that a paper which has an "R" mark at the end of the title of the paper can be cited without obtaining permission of the author. "R" means that the author's permission is granted in advance.

We would also like to remind barley workers that BGN is an official publication with reference to symbols, stock lists and linkage maps as authorized by the Second International Barley Genetics Symposium.

If you have suggestions for improving Barley Genetics Newsletter, please let us know.

The editors do not assume responsibility for correctness of English usage in BGN manuscripts. We only make corrections of obvious errors or typographical errors.

COVER DIAGRAM - CHROMOSOME 6
With the discovery by Kramer, Veyl and Hanson (1954) of the association of linkage groups III and VII as one chromosome, a seventh linkage group was designated. This linkage group became designated as chromosome 6 as a result of linkage associations between translocation stocks and an early maturing mutant ec by Ramage and Suneson (1958).

The first map of chromosome 6(A) was published in Barley Genetics I (1963) showing locations of translocations and four loci. Robertson also published a map of chromosome 6(B) in Barley Genetics I (1963) with associations of 9 loci.
The present map of chromosome 6(C) is from this volume of Barley Genetics Newsletter (Tsuchiya, 1979).
